My travels started because I wanted to find a better way to learn and teach languages. I founded a language learning company, Fluenz, went to China to learn Mandarin, and then spent time in Europe improving my French and my Italian as well as opening our offices in Barcelona.
Most of my day is consumed by Fluenz but I’ve always been fascinated by the art of traveling. Most people keep traveling badly to uninspiring places, but I know that it is much more about how we travel than where we go. Like learning a language, traveling well to the right destination takes work. Showing people how to do it inspires my travel vlogs and videos: “Sonia’s Travels” on YouTube and “Almost Free” on ulive.com. For my work on Sonia’s Travels I’ve been lucky enough to win a Webby and to work with some great YouTubers–my videos with Mystery Guitar Man are definitely a highlight.
I live in Miami Beach, I travel as much as I can with my dog Macho, I run, and through Fluenz.org I try to contribute to the empowerment of refugees and low income immigrants who need to learn English. We take for granted speaking the language of the country we live in, but for the many who have come to America under the toughest conditions, that’s just one more hurdle–and to my mind one of the main ones. Fluenz.org offers free English learning tools for people in need, so if you are reading this and can get involved you are just a click away.
When traveling I want to see places just as locals experience them. I wouldn’t want to just tour a place, I want to get inside and feel the rhythms of life. Learning a Spanish is no different. You want to feel the magic, not just mumble a few phrases. And that’s about feeling the emotion in the language.
